Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a form of treatment which has its origins within the field of osteopathy and which has grown and developed into an effective treatment form in its own right.

Most treatments involve the subject lying down fully clothed. CST involves light physical contact (palpation). A treatment can last up to 45 minutes, however, less time may be required. Length of treatment varies; a series of treatments is normally required.

Through palpation, it is possible to evaluate the general functioning and vitality of the body by assessing a motion we call Primary Respiration which is expressed within different body structures.  This includes bone, connective tissue, internal organs, fluid systems and within the central nervous system.

When our health is compromised, we experience symptoms that can be seen as an attempt by the body to self regulate and heal. The aim of treatment is to engage available body resources, to boost the expression of primary respiration and assist in the re-establishment of health.

Who can benefit from treatment?

Craniosacral therapy is a safe treatment for adults, children, babies and infants.

What can it treat?

CST can be used to treat a wide range of conditions some of which are listed below:

Headaches
Sinusitis
TMJ pain
Back and neck problems
Frozen shoulder
Postoperative recovery
Menstrual disorders
Digestive disorders
Pain and discomfort following dental treatment
Whiplash
Trauma following injuries and accidents
Insomnia
Anxiety states

Benefits

As well as reduction in painful and distressing symptoms, benefits from treatment may include:

Increased vitality
Improved sleep
Better concentration
Improvement in mobility
Greater capacity for relaxation
Increased capacity to deal with stress

Treatment of Babies and Children

Craniosacral therapy is very beneficial in the treatment of babies and children from birth onwards. Some of the more commonly presenting difficulties include:

Breast feeding difficulties
Difficulty in bonding and attachment
Prolonged crying, irritability and distress in infancy
Excessive cranial moulding
Recurrent ear and throat infections
Hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder

Treatment during pregnancy and following childbirth is highly recommended for mothers and babies. I offer combined session work with both mothers and babies (and dads) to support  bonding and attachment. Where the birthing experience has involved interventions such as drugs and instrumentation, and stress  to mothers and infants, craniosacral therapy is highly indicated.
